Brighton

Brighton

In Mika Waltari’s brilliant book Neljä Päivänlaskua, the main character suddenly realises he has forgotten his heart under someone’s bed. I once left my heart in Brighton.

Waltarin omien sanojen mukaan Neljä päivänlaskua on “valepukuun verhottu, sentimentaalinen rakkauskertomus”. Se on kuvaus kesästä, jonka aikana kirjailija kadottaa ja löytää sydämensä useita kertoja – usein aivan kirjaimellisesti.

I was taught that heartaches are painful, because when love ends, a piece of one’s heart is left behind. However, the pain only lasts until the missing part finds its way back (almost like people and their demons in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy). I love the thought of these millions of heart-pieces scattered around the world trying to get back to where they belong.

Guys! Once you dare to invest in them…-Go to hell, Mr Brighton! Mr Kerava, too! But maybe we female ones are the same in their opinion? There might be some Mr. Jylhä who knows that very well. (Although I warned him.)
